Once again, the God Hand offered great power to a mortal human who needed it - in this case, the apostle known as the Count. The Skull Knight attacked the God Hand during this time, striking at Void in particular, but the God Hand took no damage.Ĭhronologically, the God Hand next appeared in the short "Black Swordsman" story arc, where their "deal with the devil" theme was made apparent. This sequence helped establish the nature and purpose of the God Hand, and at last, the God Hand had all five members for maximum power. In that arc's climax, an exhausted and torture-weakened Griffith used a special behelit, the Egg of the King, to summon the God Hand's four members and offer the entire Band of the Hawk so that he may join them as the reborn Femto. The God Hand made a few notable appearances in Berserk's story, especially in the "Golden Age" story arc. Nonetheless, the God Hand's members only see Guts as a non-threatening pest they see no reason to fear Guts and his dragon slayer sword. However, they do have a persistent enemy in the Skull Knight, and Guts himself has a fierce one-sided rivalry with the God Hand, aiming to destroy its members in retaliation for the Band of the Hawk's destruction. The God Hand has few real foes, with its members being more invested in the flow of causality and the Idea of Evil than pursuing other goals. Femto, meanwhile, embodies the selfish ambition of humanity and how far people will go to get what they truly desire. Ubik can emotionally manipulate people into performing sacrifices to the God Hand, and Conrad is a near-silent observer who has a pestilence and rodent theme. As for personalities and themes, the God Hand's members all differ, with Slan embodying perverted erotic pleasure in pain and suffering while Void acts more calm and polite than the others. Notably, each member used to be human, but through arcane means, they all became the ultimate servants of the Idea of Evil. The God Hand, as its name suggests, is made up of five members - the big-brained Void, the succubus-like Slan, the pucker-mouthed Conrad, the ever-grinning Ubik and most recently, the winged Femto, the reincarnation of Griffith himself.
